SAW Resonator is a filter whereby the electrical input signal is converted to a acoustic wave by so-called interdigital transducers (IDTs) on a piezoelectric substrate like quartz. The IDTs contain interleaved metal electrodes that are used to launch and receive the waves, which means that an electrical signal is converted into an acoustic wave and then back to an electric signal.
The most frequent set of SAW-filters are bandpass filters, that are in very widespread use in radio systems (including cell phone handsets and base stations) and in national TV. There are many forms with diverse advantages, such as low form factor, low insertion loss, small size, or high speed operation. The wide variety of kinds is possible because nearly arbitrary shapes can be defined on the surface with very large precision.
